India 2020 – The Golden Triangle and more

Its a spur of the moment “Bucket List” thing, organised late 2019, but we head to India and Nepal in January 2020.

Do you have a bucket list?

We have already covered plenty of countries, but not really documented them, so here we go.

Starting this adventure with an ‘Old Delhi Breakfast Foodie Walk’, see the video on Youtube.

We were told that by doing a morning walk, there would be less people around! Raj was an awesome host, taking us down lanes we would never walk alone, and telling stories to fill in the walk.  And the food he introduced us too was fantastic, filling and all part of our adventure.  This from their website; “The beauty of an early walk relies upon savouring the delectable dishes available only in the mornings. Much of them include Bedmi Pooris – a puffy, hefty, deep-fried puri-like bread made of wheat flour, spices, and dal, which is served with a spicy aloo sabzi, or potato curry; Pitthi and Matar kachori – a proper Delhi preparation, with peas/dal stuffing, spiced up with condiments, served hot with potato gravy; Paneer Pakoda – huge cubes of cottage cheese immersed in a flour batter, and then deep fried; Nahari – a sumptuous non-vegetarian dish cooked overnight with hot curry spices; Paaye – with soup like consistency, Paaye is considered to be a royal food, made of goat’s trotters and is usually eaten for breakfast”

We were so immersed in this experience, that we forgot to take video and pictures at the important bits…. the taste testing.  Oh well, you will get the jist?

Then we join a tour group, On The Go Tours, to travel “The Golden Triangle”. We will be wandering through some treasured Indian sights in famous cities, Delhi, Agra & Jaipur as well as visit Lucknow, Varanasi and ending our journey in Kathmandu. The intoxicating mix of culture, sights and sounds, scenery and wildlife, smells and the sensory overload will be all apart of this awesome adventure. We are exploring with a small, but like minded group. Everyone on this tour were interesting, interactive and great to be around…. we had a fantastic time meeting and wandering with you. It’s taken me 3 months to edit this first story of the 16 day adventure and since then a lot has happened in the world. Countries have been put into lock down and travelers are in hibernation, with many travelers having been affected by this pandemic. (I write this note more as a reference to myself, so that when I look back at this video when I am older I can remember this time in history). Please enjoy this first video of the tour group on Youtube. https://youtu.be/BYfVZCfI3S4

While in Dehli, our recommendations are:

  1. Spend as many days in Dehli as you can, the city is amazing. We spent four days there. Once you have visited the sights, you should go back and see them again.
  2. The Dehli Breakfast Foodie Tour. They take you to places where you wouldn’t be brave enough to venture on your own and the FOOD! If you’re a fan of Indian cuisine, it doesn’t get more real than this.
  3. The metro rail system. Easy to navigate, cheap and fun. You’re rubbing shoulders with the locals and you are often quite the novelty.

4. Sights: the Red Fort, a bicycle rickshaw ride, the Jama Masjid, Raj Ghat – the marble monument to  Mahatma Gandhi, Humayun’s tomb, the Imperial Palace of India, and walk along the magnificent boulevard from the Gate to the Palace to the Gate to India.

Things we suggest you avoid:

  1. We don’t recommend a cooking course, unless it has come recommended to you by others. Having done several cooking courses, mainly through Asia, this course was a major let down, and a money earner for the lady who ‘conducted’ the course.
  2. Tuk Tuks and taxis. Use the railway.
  3. Watch out for hawkers, they will attempt to take you to their shops so you can get an exclusive deal.

Be prepared to have every sense activated! You will see it all!
